ICC, Carbon Measures name first panel for carbon accounting

Panel members have been drawn from industry, science, civil society and academia.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Carbon Measures have announced the first set of specialists appointed to the new Technical Expert Panel on Carbon Accounting.

According to a statement, the experts will define the “principles, scope and real-world applications” of a carbon emissions accounting system, with the goal of creating an accurate and verifiable ledger-based approach to tracking emissions.

The planned framework will track product-level emissions across value chains. This will enable real-world decision-making by companies, standards-setters and policymakers worldwide.

The ICC is leading the selection process, screening applicants to ensure broad global representation and strong technical expertise.

The first ten panel members have been drawn from industry, science, civil society and academia. They represent a mix of disciplines, geographies and professional backgrounds.

The experts are expected to apply experience in sustainability, technology, public policy, and industrial and financial systems to the development of the system.

ICC deputy secretary-general Andrew Wilson said: “The initial appointments to the panel bring an exceptional depth and range of experience – reflecting the diversity of expertise that will be required to unlock carbon accounting as a tool to accelerate decarbonisation across the economy.

“We look forward to working with Carbon Measures to further build out the panel in the coming weeks, and are encouraged by the strong response from experts across a wide range of disciplines and markets.”

The initial cohort includes Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (US) Climate director Alicia Seiger and Microsoft (US) Sustainability Science and Innovation head Amy Luers, among others.

Additional experts will be named ahead of the panel’s first meeting, expected later this quarter. All members will serve on the panel in their personal capacity.
