Japanese lender Mitsubishi UFJ Bank has adopted Oracle’s Exadata Database Machine to modernise the technology infrastructure supporting its online banking platform, Mitsubishi UFJ Direct.
The bank’s latest upgrade forms part of its broader push to scale digital capabilities and improve system performance for over 10 million users.
As part of the infrastructure overhaul, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank has implemented a hybrid cloud architecture supported by Oracle’s enterprise technology. This move is said to have led to a fivefold increase in system processing capacity and provided a more stable operating environment.
The initiative is aligned with the bank’s strategy to accommodate growing transaction volumes and meet evolving customer service expectations.
Mitsubishi UFJ Direct serves as a key component in the bank’s online banking strategy. With anticipated growth in user base and transaction load, the bank required an infrastructure capable of scaling significantly.
The upgraded system incorporates microservices-based architecture, allowing for faster deployment of new services and streamlined integration with future applications.
MUFG Bank managing director and system planning department head of division Yukie Rikitake said: “Mitsubishi UFJ Bank is committed to providing a more seamless and efficient customer experience by strengthening its digital infrastructure.
“By adopting Oracle Exadata, we have built a high-performance system capable of meeting the growing demands for data processing and doubling user traffic. Furthermore, we continue to evaluate ways to leverage Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services to support the growth of our digital strategy.”
To ensure continuity during updates and system maintenance, the bank is employing Oracle Base Database Service and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution within OCI as part of its testing framework.
For remote disaster recovery and real-time data synchronisation, the on-premises setup leverages Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) along with Oracle Data Guard. This combination is said to ensure consistent availability and the ability to manage increasing workloads effectively.
Oracle Exadata and scale-out technologies senior vice president Kothanda Umamageswaran said: “Oracle’s hybrid cloud capabilities have helped Mitsubishi UFJ Bank achieve success with its implementation while optimising costs.
“Mitsubishi UFJ Bank was able to perform a major upgrade to its on-premises platform with Exadata Database Machine, while the compatibility provided by OCI helped ensure that resources for testing upgrades could be accessed as needed, with consumption-based pricing.”
